SOLOW BUILDING   |   NYC

This distinctive black and white tower, completed in 1974 by SOM for the Solow Development Corporation, rises 49 stories above one of Midtown Manhattan’s busiest streets. The tower’s north and south elevations gradually slope outward and widen as they approach ground level. This innovative strategy enabled the design to comply with New York City’s strict setback rules, which are intended to break up building massing so that natural light can reach the street. The Solow building has become an iconic figure of the New York City Skyline and hosts record rental prices per square foot for office space with its striking Central Park views and esteemed address.

The Solow Development Corporation enlisted SOM to innovate the legacy tower's lobby and amenities to fit the post pandemic worker. These updates include the Lobby, Fitness Center, Gallery, Outdoor Plaza, and 27th floor. Staying true to the original design and heritage, the new lobby is lined in travertine, a perfect compliment to the Solow Family's monumental art collection put on display. The Fitness Center boasts state of the art spaces, including facilities such a Yoga Studio and Spa Pools. On the 27th floor, the amenities level, workers can find lounges, a coffee bar, dining spaces, as well as meeting rooms and a board room. In true SOM fashion, an iconic look is achieved through the use of a multidimensional blue marble juxtaposed with shades of soft beige travertine and white oak.  Curated furniture pieces are layered with soft hues of blue velvets and leathers, lined by champagne metals and wood details. The Solow building will set a new standard for luxury office tower amenities and further its exemplary status on 57th street.
